Come in. We'll show you around.

Calm Harbour is a small children's home in Newton Abbot.

Only two children at most live here, so it's not a big or busy home with lots of people.

You'll have your own bedroom, people around who get to know you properly, and support with the things you need help with.

Most of all, we want Calm Harbour to be somewhere you can
feel safe, comfortable and at home.

Have a look around and choose what you'd like to know more about.

A bedroom at Calm Harbour

Your space

What will my room be like?

Your room. Your space.

You'll have your own bedroom.

We want it to feel like yours, so we'll talk to you about what you like and how you'd like your room to look.

Bring the things that matter to you. Photos, books, games, favourite bedding, pictures or things that remind you of people and places you love.

Because everyone needs a space of their own.

Everyday life

What about the rest of the house?

It's a home, so you'll find all the usual things.

Somewhere to curl up and watch TV. A kitchen for making dinner or grabbing a snack. Places to play games, listen to music, spend time together or just hang out.

There's space outside too.

You can spend time with other people when you want to — and have some space when you don't.

We want it to feel lived in, comfortable and yours too.

The people around you

Who will I meet?

You'll meet a small team of people who are there to support you.

Their job isn't just to know what's written in your care plan.

They'll want to know you.

What makes you laugh. What you love doing. What you really don't like. How you communicate. What makes a difficult day easier. What makes a good day really good.

If you need extra help with your health, we also have nurses and other healthcare professionals who can help.

And don't worry — you won't have to meet everyone at once.

People at Calm Harbour

Your everyday

What will I do every day?

Well... what do you like doing?

There isn't one Calm Harbour timetable that everybody has to follow. You'll still have things like school or education, appointments and everyday routines, but there'll be time for the things you enjoy too.

Gaming Football Music Cooking Animals Drawing Films Shopping Being outside Something new?

We'd like to know what makes a good day for you.

Staying connected

Can I still see my
family and friends?

The people who matter to you still matter.

Coming to live somewhere new doesn't mean the people who are important to you suddenly stop being important.

Every child's circumstances are different, but where it's right for you, we'll help you keep in touch with family, friends and other people who matter to you.

We'll talk to you about this as part of your plan.

Your voice matters

Will I get a say?

Yes.

Adults might need to make some decisions about your care and support. But that doesn't mean decisions should simply happen around you.

We want to know what you think.

What's working? What's not? Is there something you'd like to change? Is there something you're worried about? What would you like to happen next?

And you don't always have to tell us by sitting down and having a big conversation. If talking isn't the easiest way for you to communicate, we'll find another way together.

It's your life. Your voice belongs in the conversation.

Support that's right for you

What if I need more help?

Everyone who lives at Calm Harbour will need different kinds of support.

You might need help with some everyday things. You might have physical health needs. You might sometimes find your emotions difficult to manage. Or there might be things that the people supporting you need special training to understand.

That's okay.

Our team can get help from specialist nurses at Ocean Healthcare so they can understand what you need and how best to support you.

You don't need to understand all the medical words or arrangements.
That's our job, not yours.

Growing in confidence

Will I have to do everything for myself?

No.

But if there are things you'd like to learn to do, we'll help you.

That could be making something to eat, looking after your room, shopping, travelling, managing money or learning other skills that give you more independence.

You don't have to learn everything at once.

Growing in confidence happens one step at a time.

Getting to know each other

What happens before I move in?

First, we get to know each other.

Where possible, moving to Calm Harbour won't start with simply arriving with your bags. We'd like you to have a chance to see the house and meet us first.

01 Come and visit

Have a look around and see what you think.

02 Meet us

Get to know some of the people who might support you.

03 Ask questions

Tell us what's important to you and anything you're wondering about.

04 Take your time

Depending on your plan, you may spend longer with us before moving in.

You're getting to know us too.

Questions are welcome

You might still
be wondering...

Will I have my own bedroom? +

Yes. Your bedroom will be your own space and we'll help you make it feel like yours.

Who else will live there? +

There can be up to two children living at Calm Harbour. We think very carefully about whether children are likely to be comfortable living together before someone moves in.

Can I bring my things? +

Of course. We'll talk to you about what you'd like to bring and what you'd like in your room.

What will I eat? +

We'll get to know what you like — and what you definitely don't! You'll be able to have a say in meals, while we'll also make sure any dietary or health needs are looked after.

What happens with school? +

We'll work with you and the people involved in your education to help you keep learning and get the support you need.

Can I see my family? +

Every situation is different, but where seeing or speaking to family is part of your plan, we'll help make that happen.

What if I'm unhappy about something? +

Tell us. You have the right to say when something doesn't feel right. We'll listen and help you understand what can happen next. We'll also make sure you know about other people you can speak to if you'd rather talk to someone outside Calm Harbour.

Can I visit before I move in? +

Where possible, yes. We'd much rather you had the opportunity to see the house and meet us than have to imagine what it's like from a website.

Come and say hello

Want to come
and see?

We'd like to meet you too.

A website can show you pictures and tell you a little about Calm Harbour. But it can't tell you exactly how somewhere feels.

If Calm Harbour might become your home, we hope you'll get the chance to come and see it for yourself.

Have a look around. Meet some of us. Ask questions. Tell us what's important to you.

You don't have to work everything out on your first visit.

We'll get to know each other
one step at a time.
